With the help of our librarian, Mr Bernard Barvir, we organized a 2-hour meeting with the Canadian-Indian author Joseph Boyden. Two classes of Premières had beforehand studied the short stories Born With A Tooth in their French class (and “The Sugar Girl”and “Turtle Island” in both French and English).

Our charity Casa de Saint Louis started sponsoring two children this year: Basanti Bandia in India, and Shabani Ally in Kenya. Two classes of seconds will exchange letters with the children every year, and this will give us an opportunity to teach them about the culture of those two countries.

Because so many of our colleagues wished to practice their English more regularly, we (the English team) set up a little ritual and every Thursday, we lunch together (only those who wish to participate) and talk in English. Every week, our colleagues come to speak, or just listen, and become more confident. They can thus use English in their classes more easily.

An English-speaking language assistant works with small groups of students in order to reinforce their oral language skills. The activities are developed in coordination with the English teachers so as to respect the curriculum and complete the work done in the English class.The presence of the language assistant also benefits the other teachers, whatever their specialty, as they can communicate with him/her in English everyday.

This class is taught jointly in English by two teachers: a science teacher and an English teacher. Students enjoy this opportunity to explain sciences to their English teacher. The classes are prepared by a team composed of the science teachers and the English teachers, thus allowing an exchange in teaching practices.

In the English class, we bear in mind the same objectives and respect the French National Curriculum for the 3 levels (seconde, première and terminale). We deal with the four topics listed in the curriculum, namely “Myth and Heroes”, “Spaces and exchanges”, “Progress” and “Power”. We aim at developing the students’ competence in both oral and written comprehension and expression, through various documents and activities (texts, audio or video recordings, oral presentations, essays,…).
